abstract

  • This essay analyzes an Afro-Cuban ceremony, reported by Lydia Cabrera, which took place in Matanzas province in 1956 and attempts to interpret this ritual behavior as a system of symbolic communication embedded in social interaction. The ultimate meaning of the ceremony must be sought in the concrete conditions of deprivation and dependence, and in the heritage of slavery which blacks have historically suffered in Cuba.-Author
