This chapter provides an overview of status of coal usage using existing and emerging technologies for power generation, metal processing, coal conversion, other industrial use of coal, and carbon capture in coal-fired power plants. The current “state-of-play” and implications of suggested developmental trends of emerging, cleaner manufacturing industries on sustainable coal utilization in the short to mid-term are also discussed, together with the likely impacts of increasing environmental pressures.
