abstract

  • As the number of doctor of nursing practice (DNP) graduates has continued to grow, it is possible to learn from experienced DNPs about their professional paths, current positions, and personal guiding principles. Although the DNP degree does not expand the legal scope of practice or clinical preparation leading to credentialing and licensure, the education exposes graduates to a broad area of knowledge and skills. In this chapter, experienced doctor of nursing practitioners were asked to reflect on their professional journeys. Their interpretations of the question asked were as diverse as the reflections they share. The reflections by the seven DNP-prepared nurses in this chapter illuminate the vast depth and breadth of experience. From the bedside to the boardroom, a commitment to quality care for their patients is evident. Many used the DNP to catapult their careers into areas previously seen as purely administrative or physician-led areas.
