abstract

  • The link between low socioeconomic status (SES) and child mental health problems is well established. Nevertheless, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are multifaceted and complex, involving factors at the child, parent, community, and system levels. For children living in low-income families, disparities in mental health are further accentuated by limited access to care, fragmented care, and poor quality of care. Thus, in this chapter we review the influential role of social determinants of mental health for children living in poverty. Next, we review disparities in mental health services access and utilization. Finally, we discuss strategies for reducing disparities among low SES children through interventions targeted to prevent, detect, and treat mental health problems within and across community-based care sectors serving low-income children. © 2012 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
