abstract

  • To date, 3095 people who had been convicted of serious crimes in the United States (almost all rapes and murders) and sentenced to long terms of imprisonment or even death have been exonerated, largely by postconviction DNA testing. Those cases almost certainly reflect only a percentage of all wrongly convicted individuals, but they have powerfully demonstrated the fallibility of the criminal justice system, pointing the way toward reforms to minimize the risks of error in criminal cases.
