abstract

  • This chapter identifies and addresses challenges that arise in calibration of multiscale models. Calibration establishes a link between a model and data. A multiscale model is structurally distinct from a single-scale model; the calibration of a multiscale model is affected by these structural differences. These differences arise due to the multiresponse and multiscale character of the calibration. An approach to the calibration of a hierarchical multiscale model is presented with application to mechanical behavior of bcc Fe, including introduction of the techniques employed in the approach. An empirical test of interscale hierarchical connections is formulated. The relationship between calibration and validation in multiscale modeling is discussed.
