abstract

  • The measurement of velocity distribution and flow visualization of water is important for predicting phenomena, such as violent geyser in a storm sewer and stratified flow in a pipe. Flow features such as velocity field and strain rate distribution are calculated using visualization techniques such as PIV (particle image velocimetry), PTV (particle tracking velocimetry), and LDV (laser Doppler velocimetry). However, such techniques require expensive setups and one-time usable expensive seeding particles. This article first proposes an affordable water PIV technique using simple off-the-shelf potato starch and laser diodes. Secondly, we assess the capability of smartphones for low-speed water PIV. Finally, the results show the parabolic velocity profile for laminar and piston type profile for the near turbulent flow, validating our claims.
