abstract

  • The monogamous relationship of the common marmoset Callithrix jacchus jacchus was studied in eight breeding pairs. The responses of paired males and females to unfamiliar conspecifics of the opposite sex were first recorded in the absence of the mate. Males, but not females, showed sexual soliciting behaviour. In the presence of the mate, the paired animals showed strong intra-sexual aggression: males did not solicit unfamiliar females and the previous eagerness of males to mate with, and the indifference of females to strangers of the opposite sex were replaced by a tendency to behave aggressively. Contacts between the paired animals also increased and it seems likely that attraction between familiar partners and aggressive behaviour directed at strangers are important in maintaining the stability of the pair-bond. © 1983.
