abstract

  • The Khōjā of East Africa pose a challenge to diaspora studies in their emic identity and etic transnational organization. They have no imagined homeland and have made a Shia Islamic identity over their Indic ethnic heritage. Exploring the subtlety of emic Indic concepts allows us to deepen our understanding of such complex microhistorical phenomenon.
