abstract

  • The Batá Formation has been a key unit in paleogeographic reconstructions of Colombia since it was first described as a Jurassic unit. However, the paleontologic evidence for this age was not beyond doubt. The trigoniids collected from the upper part of the unit were misidentified and should be referred to the late late Jurassic-early Cretaceous genus Syrotrigonia. On palynomorph evidence, the Interulobites triangularis, Cyclusphaera psilata, Classopolis, and Balmeiopsis limbatus assemblage indicates that the section should be late Valanginian-Hauterivian in age. © 2003 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
