This paper presents an overview and synthesis of a series of studies investigating engineering students' and practitioners' mathematical thinking. The themes (different forms and aspects of mathematical thinking) that emerged from the analysis of the data represent opportunities for reflection on what could be addressed in the mathematical education of engineers.
