abstract

  • Normal pregnant women and an abnormal group with diabetes, hypertension, and pre-eclampsia (conditions commonly associated with placental insufficiency) were studied by injecting para-aminohippurate (PAH) into the amniotic fluid. Maternal urinary output of PAH was determined over a 6 hour period and in some cases the disappearance of PAH from the amniotic fluid was measured directly. Apparent amniotic fluid clearance and per cent recovery of PAH in maternal urine were calculated. Results revealed that both amniotic fluid PAH clearance and per cent recovery of PAH in urine were decreased in pre-eclampsia, hypertension, and progestational diabetes. Decreased clearances and per cent urinary recoveries of PAH in these conditions may be related to decreased uterine and/or placental blood flow or increased myometrial tone and may correlate with fetal disease in utero. © 1968.
