The pathogenesis of hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) is presented, followed by a discussion of the immune hematologic and obstetric factors determining the disease. The blood group systems and their relationship to HDN are reviewed in conjunction with a discussion of the obstetric management of such cases. Indications for Rh-gamma globulin prophylactic therapy are emphasized in particular.
