  • Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Ltd., with a turnover of Rs. 1750 crores, is conceived as the most modern, technologically efficient and eco-friendly greenfield integrated steel plant with a capacity of 1.60 mtpa hot rolled steel products. Spread over 3600 acres of land, JVSL is the single largest investment in the state of Karnataka. The entire capacity realisation of 1.60 mtpa through the technology route, namely, Pellet Plant COREX BOF CCP HSM, has been established from April 2001 onwards. JVSL has been accredited with ISO 9002 and ISO 14001 for entire integrated operation within one year of its operation. Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Ltd. has adopted COREX iron making technology in its integrated process route. This paper aims to provide a technological overview on various coals used in COREX. The characteristics of the coals required for COREX has been highlighted. The experience gained by more than two years of COREX operation with various coals are also presented. The possibilities of using Indian coals in COREX has been discussed.
