abstract

  • Construction usually represents about half of the gross domestic investment in Latin American countries. It is usually an important sector where employment is created. Thus, the contributions of the construction sector to overall growth and employment in Latin American are of principal importance. However, it is not clear, since construction activities generally constitute non-traded goods and services, how well the construction sector in each Latin American country is performing its economic function. Previous comparisons in the early seventies have suggested that there are wide disparities in construction costs across Latin American countries. The purpose of this paper is to determine if these differences still remain towards the end of the decade.
