abstract

  • This paper presents a shock-capturing model for simulating gravity flows, pressurized flows and the simultaneous occurrence of gravity and pressurized flows (mixed flows) in which free surface and pressurized flows are treated separately. Unlike other models that cannot simulate mixed flows when the free surface flow is supercritical, the proposed approach is able to simulate mixed flows without restriction of the type of flow in the free surface region. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed model is investigated using two test cases. The results show that the proposed model is robust, it can accurately describe complex flow features-such as positive and negative open channel-pressurized flow interfaces, interface reversals, and open-channel surges, and it can simulate negative pressures in the pressurized flow regime. © BHR Group 2008.
