abstract

  • Barbet birds of the genus Trachyphonus greet their partner (and most likely other members of their family) with a duett song which differs from species to species as well as in complexity, but which is most likely not pair-specific. The song of Trachyphonus d'arnaudii is accompanied by a conspicuous behaviour pattern. The song was analysed and the behaviour filmed; the controversy on the distribution of the sex roles is discussed. Up to now all more closely investigated duett-singing birds are songbirds; the barbet birds, however, are related to the woodpeckers. © 1968 Verlag der Deutschen Ornithologen-Gesellschaft.
