  • The EEG-based neuroimaging technique depends ultimately on the definition of its forward problem, a relationship between the underlying brain current sources and the observed electric potentials. Brain current sources on a macroscopic scale, in particular those originating in the neocortex, have been assumed dipolar in nature. In this study, we present evidence for the existence of monopolar and quadripolar current sources in the barrel cortex of Wistar rats undergoing 1Hz strong vibrissa deflections. Such evidence stems from concurrent observations of local field potentials from laminar microelectrodes arrays and high-resolution skull EEG recordings.
