abstract

  • Research on how social capital influences organizational knowledge transfer and subsequent organizational performance is burgeoning, and yet our understanding of they relate remains rather unclear. Although conceptual and qualitative reviews have emerged, no study has attempted to summarize previous quantitative empirical findings. In this paper, we develop an integrated model and use meta-analytic techniques to examine how structural and relational capital influence organizational knowledge transfer, and how organizational knowledge transfer influences innovativeness and financial performance. Additionally, we demonstrate how level of analysis (intra- vs. inter-organizational) and the type of industry (high-tech vs. low-tech) moderate the relationships studied. By aggregating and consolidating existing research, our study not only reveals new insights into how social capital influences organizational knowledge transfer and performance, but also provides meaningful directions for future research.
