abstract

  • The Kissimmee River, located in central Florida, was channelized for flood control during the 1960s. Movements by environmental interest groups have produced strong sentiment to restore the river and floodplain to its original state. Numerous studies of the feasibility of restoring the river have been conducted. Currently, the South Florida Water Management District is engaged in full scale field experiments and physical and mathematical modeling studies to further examine the potential for restoration. This paper presents some engineering and other considerations relating to this very unique environmental restoration project.
