abstract

  • Recent advances in computer technology and a more in-depth understanding of the intricate nature of the global climate phenomena are leading to seasonal and multiseasonal climate outlooks that are made with increasing skill and confidence. The performance efficiency of regional managed hydrologic systems can significantly benefit from the application of these climate outlooks. The hydrologic system of south Florida is one system that is currently obtaining such benefits. The extreme complexity of this system and a full spectrum of competing objectives make this application of climate outlooks particularly unique and challenging. This paper describes the successful development and implementation of climate outlooks within the operational guidelines for managing Lake Okeechobee water level and discharges.
