abstract

  • Antennas made of magneto-photonic assemblies (MPAs) are expected to have good coupling and high gains at GHz frequencies. The MPAs, as designed, consist of 10...40 repeating units, with each unit laminated from two anisotropic dielectric ("A") layers and one ferrimagnetic ("F") layer. This paper demonstrates the fabrication of functional "A" layers from laminates of two ceramics with largely different permittivities and low dielectric losses at GHz frequencies. Laminates of commercially available α-Al2O3 and Nd-doped BaTiO3 substrates are characterized using in-cavity measurements and finite-element-modeling analysis. The observed anisotropic dielectric constants are in agreement with mean field predictions. The overall dielectric losses were slightly higher than the reported minimum values of constituent materials, primarily due to extrinsic factors. A first demonstration of high gain in a simplified 6-layer photonic assembly is provided. Copyright © 2007 MS&T'O7®.
