Comments are presented on the article by Zuroff et al., who described a social competition model of depression and presented empirical findings from a daily diary study that were largely consistent with the tenets of their model. The current authors commend the study's methodological rigor and rich description of dyad-level Interactions. A social-cognitive framework for Interpreting the findings is presented, drawing heavily upon self-verification theory. To the extent that the study's findings can be accounted for by social-cognitive processes, the addition of an evolved Involuntary Defeat Strategy may be unnecessary and less parsimonious.
