abstract

  • A new full- and large-scale wind testing apparatus generically named the Wall of Wind (WoW) has been built by researchers at the International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC), Florida International University (FIU). Its development is pursued in stages, starting with two fans (Phase 1, funded by Florida Division of Emergency Management), then expanded to six fans (Phase 2, funded by RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd). Currently Phase 2.5 with twelve fans is being designed. Phase 2.5 will generate Category 4 hurricane wind speeds. The WoW forms a large open circuit system during operation. Three different types of test are envisioned: (i) Aerodynamic, (ii) Hydro-aerodynamic, and (iii) Destructive tests.
