This paper presents a new approach to guiding the blind by making use of computer vision techniques. The proposed vision system performs real-time image analysis and converts image information into acoustic signals. The main functions in image analysis are scene identification, range finding, and deviation error analysis. The identification process is performed in two steps, first-pass evaluation and second-pass evaluation, in order to resolve ambiguities.
