abstract

  • The United States university system permits the offering of a wide variety of courses. In recent years at least two undergraduate courses have been offered on women in the military by men in the military. Their syllabi are presented here. Readers should reflect upon the possibility of offering similar courses, and should consider what would be the most appropriate content. The course offered by Colonel Richard Rice is given at the University of Missouri, a large public university located in the Middle West. It is sponsored by both the Military Science Department and the Women's Studies Program. It is straightforward and based on official documents. Two authors, Treadwell and Bach, are women who have served as colonels-Treadwell in the Army, Bach in the Air Force. The course offered by Lt Col Faris Kirkland is quite different and is reported in more detail because the topics and materials are less obvious. It is an elective Military Science course; the University of Pennsylvania is not a public school and is included among the 'Ivy Legue' institutions. © 1982.
