abstract

  • Quantum fluctuations of an optical transition moment are observed to be suppressed by strong coherent excitation of a weak auxiliary transition. The stabilization is manifest through the appearance of subnatural linewidths in the resonance fluorescence spectrum and is due to coherent mixing of atomic states. Our results are in quantitative agreement with the predictions of L. M. Narducci et al. [Phys. Rev. A 42, 1630 (1990)]. © 1991 The American Physical Society.
