abstract

  • The steady-state gain and lasing in a closed, coherently and incoherently pumped three-level system, are analyzed and the conditions for the onset of lasing without population inversion are derived. Shown is that by adjusting the incoherent pumping rate, the functional dependence of the laser intensity on the atomic number N can be manipulated. Under suitable operating conditions, this three-level system may demonstrate a transition from lasing with inversion to lasing without inversion, and lasing without inversion may be as efficient as lasing with inversion. © 1994.
