An overview is given on studies of light absorption and parametric amplification based on the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) enhanced third-order nonlinearity in a four-level atomic system. It is shown that enhanced nonlinear absorption in the four-level system is evident when two coupling lasers and one probe laser are present.
