Three changes have been used to explain the trends of reported cases of venereal diseases in the United States: changes in the use of antibiotics by physicians and in the antibiotic susceptibility of pathogens, changes in social controls and governmental regulations and changes in sexual behavior patterns among the American people. The third explanation seems the most popular and is examined here in greater detail than the other two. According to this explanation, sexual attitudes have become more permissive, behaviors bhaviors have become more promiscuous, and technologic advances in contraception have contributed to permissiveness, promiscuity, and, in turn, the VD epidemic.
