abstract

  • This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the process of scientific discovery. It began as a discussion between the editors after attending a conference on behavioral development. It recounts the intellectual journeys of thirteen prominent developmental scientists and document their individual struggles to better understand, describe, and explain various developmental phenomena. The core idea behind our charge to the authors was that development is a bidirectional process and that the process of scientific discovery is similar in this respect. The chapter chooses to conceptualize the volume in terms of the concept of bidirectionality in part because our own view of development is that it is a bidirectional process. Scientific investigation typically involves unexpected twists and turns, a complex mix of struggles, blind alleys, and the occasional serendipity, insight, or discovery.
