abstract

  • Measurements are reported of the proton and deuteron spin structure functions [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] at beam energies of 29.1, 16.2, and 9.7 GeV, and [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] at a beam energy of 29.1 GeV. The integrals [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] were evaluated at fixed [Formula Presented] using the full data set to yield [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] The [Formula Presented] dependence of the ratio [Formula Presented] was studied and found to be small for [Formula Presented] Within experimental precision the [Formula Presented] data are well described by the twist-2 contribution, [Formula Presented] Twist-3 matrix elements were extracted and compared to theoretical predictions. The asymmetry [Formula Presented] was measured and found to be significantly smaller than the positivity limit [Formula Presented] for both proton and deuteron targets. [Formula Presented] is found to be positive and inconsistent with zero. Measurements of [Formula Presented] in the resonance region show strong variations with [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] consistent with resonant amplitudes extracted from unpolarized data. These data allow us to study the [Formula Presented] dependence of the integrals [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] below the scaling region. © 1998 The American Physical Society.
