The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) stormwater regulation program prohibits non-storm water discharges into entering receiving waters. In support of research on stormwater quality, an experimental watershed, representing a typical urban environment in a tropical climate, is developed to study pollutant fate and transport in an actual and large scale setting. Data from actual storm events is being collected at monitoring stations and analyzed. Various computer simulation models are being tested and calibrated, and results are compared with actual data to determine model applicability. Recommendations for future research needs in the area of data collection methods, monitoring equipment, application of computer models in predicting impacts of pollutants on water quality, and pollutant transport are addressed.
