abstract

  • This paper analyzes the interactive heat transfer involving forced convection and radiation in the development region of a gas duct flow of non-circular cross-section. In particular, this study is concerned with a situation wherein both, velocity and temperature of an absorbing-emitting gas develop simultaneously in an isothermal duct with non-black walls. The radiative contribution assuming a gray gas behavior is modeled by a differential method, the so-called method of moments that circumvents the partial integrodifferential equation typical of this kind of problem. Accordingly, the new formulation governing the combined heat exchange process accounts for a coupled system of partial differential equations for velocity and temperature and an ordinary differential equation for irradiation. The methodology using the method of lines involving differential and difference-formulations and coarse grids is applied to these ducts of non-circular cross-sections. The results based on sixteen lines or less are computed numerically using a Runge-Kutta subroutine. Study results are discussed.
