abstract

  • Combined free and forced convection is numerically investigated for laminar flow in the fully developed region of a vertical, semicircular duct with longitudinal internal fins. The flow of Newtonian fluids is assumed steady in terms of the Boussinesq approximation. The semicircular duct is subjected to a thermal boundary condition of axially uniform heat flux and a peripherally uniform wall temperature. The fully developed temperature field in the semicircular duct with longitudinal fins is obtained analytically/numerically by solving the energy equation employing the method of lines (MOL). The energy equation is reformulated into a system of first order differential equations controlling the temperature along each line. The solution covers a wide range of fin numbers, the fin height to duct radius ratio, and Rayleigh numbers. In addition, the number of lines used in the computational domain and the fully developed Nusselt numbers are shown in tabular form-for the above mentioned fin parameters. The results presented are displayed graphically to illustrate the influence of buoyancy on the fins. It is further shown that the Nusselt number and friction factor increase for all values of Raleigh numbers, fin numbers, and relative fin heights.
