Fully developed convective heat transfer in a coiled pipe with a substantial pitch (helicoidal pipe) has been investigated by the perturbation method. The results of this study indicate that a torsion effect appears in the second-order solution (T2 terms). Torsion will rotate the high temperature contour deviate from the outer wall. This deviation will be enhanced by an increase in the Reynolds number, the Prandtl number, and the curvature. As a result, the peak of the Nusselt number along the periphery will depart from the outer wall. The results also indicate that increasing torsion may slightly reduce the average Nusselt number. In the validity region of the perturbation solution, the reduction in the Nusselt number for a large torsion pipe may be around 1%.
