abstract

  • Hurricane Andrew was the first major hurricane to pass over Dade County since 1926. The hurricane caused significant damage to roof coverings (tiles and shingles), mobile homes, wood framed walls and roof structures, large metal buildings, boats in marinas, and vegetation. After the hurricane, approximately 135,000 residences needed either roof repairs or a complete overhaul. In this study, a neural network based structural damage estimation program is developed. The data used in the analyses were compiled by the Metro-Dade County Building and Zoning Department during post hurricane damage assessment inspections. Specific damage conditions, such as roof damage, percent exterior damage, and percent interior damage are analyzed in relation to the geographical location of residences, wind speed, building construction materials and roof type. This analysis could be useful for insurance companies and land development to predict possible damage due to hurricanes.
