abstract

  • A RECENT report of deformation features in high pressure-low temperature blueschists on the Ile de Groix, France, has demonstrated that the style of deformation is one of progressive, non-coaxial simple shear1. I present here evidence that the blueschists in Jamaica underwent a coaxial pure shear deformation contemporaneous with metamorphism and suggest that simple shear deformation in blueschists is no more compatible with subduction than any other deformation style. I suggest that domains of relatively homogeneous deformation occupying tens of km3 may develop in subduction complexes. © 1978 Nature Publishing Group.
