abstract

  • Rip currents are the greatest hazard at surf beaches. Beachgoers are often unaware that nearshore currents exist, much less that they can be life threatening. Pro-active beach management needs to be undertaken to reduce the large number of rescues, near-drowning events, and loss of life at U.S. and worldwide beaches. © 2011 ASCE.
