Field testing has shown that AASHTO's Manual for Bridge Inspection and Evaluation often does not accurately reflect the large reserve capacity of steel girder bridges. To more closely evaluate and assess the contribution of different structural elements on the performance of steel girder bridges, a full scale steel plate girder bridge was constructed and several tests - including ultimate load tests and punching shear tests - were conducted at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
