  • Mercedes Vigon, Ph.D., the associate director of the International Media Center, and associate professor at SCJ, has been a Media incubator, TV news director and executive producer for great part of her professional career.

    As a News Director, she launched the TV Channel Net Financial News in 60 days, achieving full on-air operation. Vigón staffed the newsroom, technical crew and talent, and oversaw the simultaneous production of NFN website. She managed daily newsroom operations of Net Financial News, a daily two-hour, live TV business/financial television news program, and expanded operations from two to eight hours of continuous coverage.

    Previously, she worked as executive producer for CBS-Telenoticias, a 24 hours news channel. There, Vigón coordinated the newsroom operations and managed communication between reporters, field producers, satellite department, assignment desk, editors, master control, producers, writers and anchors.

    During her time at the University of Miami, she acquired a Ph.D., and a M.A. in broadcasting journalism. Other studies include doctoral courses in Media Management, a Master in print journalism in the Spanish Daily ABC, and a bachelor in Communication Sciences at the Universidad Complutense (UC) in Madrid.

    Working at FIU, she launched the Journalism Master's Program with Tec de Monterrey México; and now, continues to train journalists in the Western Caribbean, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominican Republic, Argentina, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Spain.

    She has also won and managed as PI (principal investigator) close to $1.5 million on grants to create training programs, such as one from the Social Science Research Council aimed to strengthen Media Coverage of Islam and Muslim Communities in Latin America and South Florida, and others to produce documentaries and to follow the coverage of the Spanish-language Media in social and ethic issues such as religion; immigration and environmental equality.
