biography

  • Sarah Eisenstein Stumbar, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor in the Division of Family and Community Medicine in the Department of Humanities, Health, and Society and Assistant Dean for Clinical Education. Since joining Florida International University’s faculty in August 2015, Dr. Stumbar has focused on teaching medical students at all stages of their training; and providing medical care--including expanded access to family planning services--to the underserved communities of Opa Locka and Miami Gardens through the Green Family Foundation Neighborhood Health Education program (NeighborhoodHELP™). She develops innovative strategies to teach a holistic, integrated approach to primary care.

    With a deeply engrained commitment to social justice and reproductive health care, Dr. Stumbar went into medicine with the belief that compassionate and equitable health care can change not only lives but also entire communities. She received her BA in the History of Medicine from Yale University; an MPH in Sexuality and Health from Columbia University; and her MD from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. In 2015, Dr. Stumbar completed her residency training in Social and Family Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York, with an interest in reproductive health care in the primary care setting.

    Dr. Stumbar has advocated for the rights of girls at the United Nations; for increased funding for global HIV programs on Capitol Hill; and for single-payer healthcare at the New York State Assembly. Dr. Stumbar has published multiple narrative essays and papers about her experiences and won numerous awards for her commitment to community health and humanistic medicine.
