Brian Schriner was appointed Dean of the College of Architecture + The Arts in 2010. Upon the integration of the FIU School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the college was renamed to the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) in 2016.
Under Dean Schriner’s leadership — and the hard work of the college’s faculty, professional staff, students, alumni, donors, board members, and partners all of whom are united in support of CARTA’s mission to prepare career-ready professionals with global perspectives through applied learning, research, and creative activities — CARTA has established a reputation as one of the nation’s most innovative and forward-thinking colleges. Once again ranked #14 in 2024 as the Most Innovative US Public College in the United States by World Universities Ranking Innovation (WURI), the third consecutive year CARTA has been recognized in the Top 15: #FIUCARTACreativeForcesAtWork!
In support of CARTA’s student-centric mission, Dean Schriner has strategically expanded CARTA’s nationally ranked undergraduate and graduate degree programs to meet the needs of the creative, information, and tech economies of South Florida and beyond, adding high demand undergraduate and graduate degrees, including the College’s first doctoral degree and the State of Florida’s first Doctor of Design (D.Des) program. The CARTA QuickView includes the college’s mission, vision, degree programs, accreditation organizations, rankings, and student and faculty demographics.
One of Dean Schriner’s priorities has been to expand the CARTA’s financial base in support the college’s students’ success and the college’s faculty members’ teaching and research, securing $49.7 million in philanthropic donations and over $50M in in auxiliary revenues. The philanthropic gifts include two of the largest donations to the FL State University System (SUS) in support of music, establishing the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim School Music & Performing Arts, and for journalism and media, establishing the Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media. Dean Schriner has also been able to nearly double the number of the College’s accomplished, world-class teaching and research faculty; strategically incorporate immersive and emerging technologies into CARTA’s studios, labs, performance spaces, classrooms, newsrooms, and degree programs; and grow enrollment by 230% to nearly 4,000 students. Thus, creating more opportunities for CARTA’s motivated and talented students to fulfill their dreams and achieve their goals via access to excellence.
Dean Schriner is most proud of CARTA’s students’ performance as measured by the Florida Board of Governors. They are consistently among the highest-achieving students in terms of first-second year retention and time-to-graduation and are consistently leading the Florida State University System (SUS) for gainful employment within the college’s disciplines. In support of strategically expanding CARTA’s impacts in the communities we serve, Dean Schriner has established CARTA Medallion, the Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media Alumni Hall of Fame, the School of Communication Alumni Hall of Fame, the School of Architecture’s Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS), CARTA I Mana Wynwood, CARTA | Miami Beach Visual Arts Gallery, the CARTA | Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator, the Lee Caplin Immersive Studio For Altered Reality (i-STAR), and the award-winning Caplin News, Caplin News En Espanol, and NewsBreak, with a working news bureau in Washington, DC.
Finally, in support of CARTA’s academic mission and strategic vision, Dean Schriner has made it a college-wide priority to establish signature partnerships that provide unique, career-ready experiential learning opportunities that students with financial support. These student-centric working partnerships include but are not limited to NBCUniversal, Miami Dade County Public Schools. Miami Dade College Magic Animation Studios, the Dolan Family Foundation, the Tonkinson Family Foundation, TelevisaUnivision Student Training + Employment Program (STEP), Island TV, Reekollect Generative AI, and the Carole and Phillip Ratcliffe Foundation. In addition to his achievements as an administrator, Dean Schriner is an accomplished educator and text-book author.
Brian attended the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Miami, is a past recipient of FIU’s prestigious Teaching Incentive Award, been named FIU Instructor of the Year, and has twice been named to the FIU College of Business Administration Circle of Excellence for Teaching.
