biography

  • Dr. Emery Salom is an Associate Professor of Gynecologic Oncology and Clerkship Director at Florida International University, College of Medicine. He was appointed Inaugural Clerkship Director responsible for the educational experience of the third and fourth-year medical students in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Most recently, he was appointed the Fellowship Director for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgical Training at the Center of Gynecologic Oncology by the Society of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeons. He has been the Co-medical director of the Center of Gynecologic Oncology for the last 16 years. Dr. Salom has been awarded three board certifications by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Gynecology Surgery, Gynecologic Oncology, and (Urogynecology) Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery.

    He has authored five book chapters, 37 peer-reviewed journal articles, and over 100 national and international invited abstract and oral presentations at both National and International Scientific Meetings. He has performed over 7000 advanced robotic, laparoscopic, and radical surgery. He is a preceptor in advanced robotic surgery with DaVinci Surgical Platform and Olympus Corporation of America (including being one of the first surgeons to perform single-incision robotic hysterectomy) teaching gynecologic oncology and advanced pelvic reconstruction involving radical tumor resection, pelvic and paraaortic lymphadenectomy, advanced endometriosis, ureteral and bowel injury, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, and vesicovaginal and rectovaginal fistulas.

research interests

  • Dr. Salom has a particular interest in the surgical management of complicated pelvic pathology and the management of postoperative complications after gynecologic surgeries. His current research topics include:
    1. Robotic Ureteral Reimplantation For Injury Sustained During Hysterectomy; No Laparotomy Needed reviewing the outcome of robotic ureteral reimplantation and its success rate;
    2. a comparison of open vs laparoscopic/robotic myomectomy in perioperative morbidity;
    3. ovarian preservation after radical resection of endometriosis and resolution of pelvic pain.
