biography

  • With more that 30 years of experience in treating trauma patients, Dr. Ivan Puente serves as the Medical Director for Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Services at Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery with Added Qualifications in Surgical Critical Care.

    Dr. Puente graduated from the Honors Program at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of California – San Francisco School of Medicine. He completed his General and Vascular Surgery Residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1992. Following residency, he completed fellowships in Surgical Critical Care (1993) and Trauma Surgery (1994) also at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center.

    Dr. Puente serves as the Program Director for the Broward Health General Surgery Residency and Site Director for the Mount Sinai General Surgery Residency program at Broward Health Medical Center.

    He has been actively involved in surgical research throughout his career and has authored or co-authored a large number of publications. He has completed multiple funded projects in the field of trauma care. Recognized as a regional and national leader in Trauma Quality Improvement, Dr. Puente serves in multiple process improvement committees including as prior Chair of the Broward County Trauma Quality Improvement Committee.

    In addition to Trauma and Critical Care, Dr. Puente’s other areas of interest include Endocrine, Hernia, and Minimally Invasive Surgery.
