  • Professor Modesto “Mitch” Maidique is the Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Eminent Scholar Chair in Leadership at Florida International University (FIU). He is also Professor of Management and Executive Director of the Center for Leadership in the College of Business Administration. During the 2010-2011 academic year, Professor Maidique served as a Visiting Professor in Leadership at the Harvard Business School.

    Professor Maidique is the developer and program director for Leading Decisions, an executive leadership development program offered to C-suite executives. The Center also offers a pioneering business-oriented leadership program for public school principals (PLDP) and the Women on the Move program that targets female executives. In the spring of 2011, the Center launched its fourth program, The High Potential Leader, which is designed for directors, senior managers, and vice presidents.

    In June 2009, Professor Maidique was named President Emeritus of Florida International University by the FIU Board of Trustees in recognition of his leadership, dedication, and transformational accomplishments during his 23 year tenure as University President. From 1986 to 2009, Professor Maidique, the first Cuban American university president in U.S. history, served as president of FIU and led its transformation from a comprehensive university to a major research university classified in the highest ranking awarded by the Carnegie Foundation. Under his leadership, FIU tripled in physical size, grew to over 40,000 students, and now ranks among the 20 largest universities in the United States, with membership in Phi Beta Kappa and a Division I-A football team. During his tenure, FIU established accredited Colleges of Law, Engineering, Architecture, and Public Health; and most recently, Professor Maidique spearheaded the historic opening of the new FIU College of Medicine, one of only three U.S. medical schools established in the last 25 years. In recognition of his achievements, the FIU Board of Trustees named FIU’s main campus the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

    Professor Maidique held academic appointments at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard, and Stanford Universities. Published extensively in leading academic journals, Professor Maidique’s most recent article, Are You a Level-Six Leader? was published by Harvard Business School’s Working Knowledge online journal in July 2011. This article was the most viewed, faculty authored, article of 2011 with nearly 24,000 views and was rated as one of Working Knowledge’s most popular articles of 2011. Professor Maidique is also contributing author to ten books. His co-authored textbook, Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation, is widely used at colleges and universities. He is co-author of The Art of High Technology Management one of the best-selling articles published by the Sloan Management Review, and of Energy Future, a New York Timesbestseller on energy policy.

    As co-founder and former CEO of Analog Devices Inc.’s, Semiconductor Division, Professor Maidique also served as CEO of Collaborative Research, now Genome Therapeutics, and as senior partner in Hambrecht & Quist Venture Partners, at the time the world’s largest venture capital firm. He holds several patents for semiconductor devices. A past chairman of the Beacon Council, Miami’s economic development authority and Board member of National Semiconductor Corporation, Professor Maidique currently serves on the board of the Carnival Corporation. In 2009 he was awarded the “Sand in My Shoes” award, Miami’s top civic honor, by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.

    Professor Maidique has testified before Congress on the issues of energy conservation and energy financing and has served on the Educational Policy Advisory Committee for two United States Presidents. He also served on the Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board and was a member of the Commission on Presidential Scholars for eight years.
