biography

  • Dr. David Garber is an Associate Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Florida International University (FIU) and Co-Director of the Accelerated Bridge Construction University Transportation Center. Dr. Garber obtained his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 2014. His research has been focused in the behavior and design of prestressed and reinforced concrete members and accelerated bridge construction.

He has led large-scale experimental and analytical efforts investigating connections between precast concrete members, ultra-high performance concrete, prestressed concrete sections for short-span bridges, non-traditional shear failures in prestressed concrete bridge girders, serviceability and ultimate strength of prestressed girders with self-consolidating concrete, prestress losses in pretensioned bridge girders, and behavior of inclined struts in deep beams. Dr. Garber also led the development of an online database containing data on bridges with ABC technology from across the US. He has been involved in the development of recommendations and code specifications that have been implemented into Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) design standards. Dr. Garber is an active member of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI), serving on the Bridge Committee and Student Education Committee.

Dr. Garber is also the Director for Workforce Development for the ABC-UTC. He has organized and facilitated numerous K-12 outreach activities including summer camps for elementary school students and their parents, teacher workshops, and outreach activities with the public library.
