biography

  • John P. Diaz, M.D. is a board-certified gynecologic oncologist and Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. He also serves as Chief of Gynecologic Oncology, Director of Robotic Surgery, and Director of Clinical Research in Gynecologic Oncology at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute.

Dr. Diaz earned his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Iron Arrow Honor Society, the university’s highest distinction. He completed his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, followed by fellowship training in Gynecologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where he received the Department of Surgery Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Clinical Research.

He is internationally recognized for his expertise in minimally invasive and robotic surgery for gynecologic cancers, including endometrial, ovarian, and cervical malignancies. A surgical innovator, Dr. Diaz has pioneered fertility-sparing radical trachelectomy, sentinel lymph node mapping in gynecologic cancers, and performed Florida’s first uterine transposition procedure for a patient with gynecologic cancer.

Dr. Diaz has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and has presented his work at national and international scientific meetings. He serves as a reviewer for leading journals including Gynecologic Oncology, International Journal of Gynecologic Oncology, BioMed Cancer, and Annals of Surgical Oncology. His research interests include novel surgical techniques for ovarian cancer, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), and immunotherapy. He is the recipient of a $1.7 million research grant supporting the development of innovative therapeutics for gynecologic malignancies.

Through his academic, clinical, and research leadership roles, Dr. Diaz is committed to advancing women’s health, surgical innovation, and cancer care on a regional and national level.

research interests

  • Dr. John P. Diaz’s research focuses on advancing the surgical and medical management of gynecologic malignancies through innovative clinical trials, translational science, and surgical innovation. His work centers on ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancers, with particular emphasis on improving oncologic outcomes while preserving quality of life and fertility when possible.

A major area of his research involves the integration of novel systemic therapies, including immunotherapy, PARP inhibition, and antibody–drug conjugates, with a focus on biomarker-driven treatment strategies. He has led and served as principal investigator on multiple investigator-initiated and multicenter trials evaluating immune checkpoint inhibitors alone and in combination with targeted therapies, particularly in tumors with homologous recombination deficiency and Fanconi anemia repair pathway alterations.

Dr. Diaz also has a strong interest in advanced surgical techniques for gynecologic cancers, including robotic and minimally invasive surgery, sentinel lymph node mapping, fertility-sparing procedures, and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for ovarian cancer. His research has contributed to defining patient selection, safety, and outcomes for complex cytoreductive and fertility-preserving surgeries.

Additional research interests include health outcomes and cost-effectiveness analyses, surgical innovation, and reducing disparities in gynecologic cancer care. Through his leadership at Miami Cancer Institute and Florida International University, Dr. Diaz is committed to translating research discoveries into clinical practice and expanding access to cutting-edge therapies for women with gynecologic cancers.
