Sonia Benitez oversees the college of medicine’s budget process, financial planning, human resources, facilities planning, and information technology.
She joined FIU in 2012 as Chief Operating Officer for the Department of Health, Humanities, and Society, the college’s largest department. In 2017 she became Assistant Dean for Finance and was promoted to Senior Associate Dean of Finance and Administration in 2019.
Benitez is a certified public account and two-time Panther. She has over 25 years of experience as a finance leader with expertise in building and leading the organizational growth of complex organizations. Before joining FIU, Benitez served as Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Our Kids of Miami-Dade/Monroe, Inc., a nonprofit organization created to provide community leadership and legislative change. She also served as Vice President of Finance for Visa International for Latin America and the Caribbean. And she worked as an international tax consultant at Price Waterhouse.
Benitez is a Certified Public Accountant and two-time Panther--she received both her Bachelor of Accounting and a Master of Science in Taxation from FIU.
